Electoral College
Many of you may remember that Al Gore won the election in 2000, but George Bush won the election in 2000. No, you didn't misread that statement. You read it right. Al Gore actually won the majority of the votes that the American voters cast. But George Bush won the most electoral votes, so he got to be the president. If this sounds fishy to you, you're not alone. Though I didn't vote for Gore, I can only imagine the frustration that he went through because of the Electoral College process. I think that the Electoral College may be outdated.
In the case mentioned above it seems obvious that the majority of voters did not get their way. And that's wrong. Isn't our whole system suppose to revolve around what the majority of the people want since they are the highest authority in the land? Isn't that why we vote? So much for democracy based on the choice of the electorate. Maybe we should have the citizens of that great democracy of Iraq come over here and tell us how this is supposed to work.
I've studied the so called "advantages" of the electoral college and I'm still not convinced that it's good for America. It may have been advantageous back when our nation was sparsely populated - when the concern was for equal representation. Today, however, the whole land has been populated as the people have chosen and the lines of communication are highly advanced. So maybe it's time to rethink the Electoral College.
The debate over this issue continues to this day and I think that the American Taxpayers should decide whether they want to keep it as it is or get rid of it. To me the Electoral College makes the voting much too complex. To me it seems like it would be more fair to go by the majority of the votes. Going by the majority of the votes seems much more honest and open and less susceptible to corruption. To me it seems like it's time to get together and talk about it.
Therefore when I become president in 2008 I will make a point to bring this issue to the forefront right after we deal with the Iraq war and the War on Terror. I think the people deserve to understand this system better and get a clear explanation of why we even need it today. We should be able to settle this issue once and for all in a few days. So we will address this issue using the "Meet and Vote" program. The "Meet and Vote" program will allow the people the opportunity to decide what's best for them.
If you haven't read about the "Meet and Vote" program it is very easy to understand. The name of the program says it all. We will "Meet" together as a nation via national television and we'll talk about the issue at hand. In this case it's the Electoral College issue. These meetings will be held in the evenings and rerun through the night so that all taxpayers can have the opportunity to get informed. The live audience of American Taxpayers at the meetings will be allowed to participate with questions and comments.
Attending the meetings will be various national leaders and the experts on the issue at hand who will address the taxpayers. This will include some of your elected representatives and the vice president. I will always be there since I will be hosting each meeting and keeping order. It will also be my responsibility to make sure that both sides of the issue are equally and fairly represented. The meetings are primarily designed to educate the taxpayers because they will be voting their conscience on the issue following the meetings.
Once the people have been properly informed on both sides of the issue they will be asked to go to the polls and "Vote" their conscience. The voting will take place the day after the last meeting (if there are more than one) while the issue is fresh on everyone's mind - and before they can be swayed by talking heads on television who have an agenda. The votes will be tallied and the voters will be notified of the outcome immediately.
The majority will always rule when using the "Meet and Vote" process. The results of the voting will then be given to your elected representatives who will immediately enact legislation accordingly. Thus the will of the people will circumvent all of the nonsense in Washington that works against what they want. This includes all lobbyists, corrupt judges, Congressmen with a hidden agenda and anyone in the Executive Department that may have wrong motives. As for the Electoral College, I think that it's seen better days. That's my opinion.
