Gun Control
Our founding fathers thought it best that Americans have the right "to keep and bear arms". Back then kings were good at trying to disarm their citizens - just as some governments do today. The second amendment of our U.S. Constitution plainly states that our right to have weapons of protection is not to be infringed upon by those who we elect to lead us. I am a firm believer in the right of American citizens to own weapons and I also believe that there are plenty of gun control laws already. We don't need any more. We just need to apply the laws that are already on the books - and probably get rid of some of those.
Throughout recent history national governments have been known to attempt to disarm their citizens. But that is a very dangerous scenario for the citizens. That's because governments are made up of men. And from time to time men are very good at getting power hungry. When power hungry men find themselves in charge of a nation who's citizens have been disarmed, it never turns out good for the unarmed citizens. Our founding fathers understood that. They understood human nature. They wanted to keep their guns.
They weren't about to let the King of England disarm the American people - which is what England wanted to do. So they made it clear that the American citizens should always have the right to keep and bear arms. They put it in writing - in the U.S. Constitution for all to see. Because of this bold step by our founding fathers, in an attempt to allow the American people the right to stand ready, our nation has a rich history of loving guns of all types.
Americans just like guns, it's as simple as that. And we must never allow our leaders to take them away from us. In fact, I think that the founding fathers were wise to form small well organized armies called "militias". The militias protected the American people from foreign powers, but they also protected the people from the U.S. government. They were naturally suspicious of men who have the power of the national government behind them. They understood human nature. They didn't want to be caught with their pants down should the national government get out of control.
Though militias were superseded by the National Guard for the most part in the early 1900's, I'm not sure that there still isn't a place for the old fashion militias that are completely separate from the state or federal government. Independent militias may be more important now than ever, as we watch the power that our founding fathers gave the people being gradually taken by Washington insiders. Today it is worse than ever. It may not be a bad idea to have independent militias standing ready in each state, just in case.
Those who are for gun control are under the impression that guns are the reason that there is so much murder and armed criminal action now days. They believe that if everyone was disarmed there wouldn't be so much killing and robbery. But they (purposely) forget that the guns have been here all along. If guns were the problem we would have had crime problems from the beginning of our nations history, since all families were armed. But we all know that was not the case. American society has become more lawless than ever. That's the problem. People are the problem, not guns.
You will never get the (illegal) guns away from the criminals. They're not registered, so no one knows who has them or where they are. That would be a big waste of time - trying to convince criminals to give up their guns. So why would you want to take them away from the innocent members of society who will need them to defend themselves against those with criminal intent? That would be stupid.
If we could take all of the guns away from the bad guys I would be for that kind of gun control. Our streets would be safer. But it just isn't going to happen. As mentioned previously, you sure don't want to disarm the innocent members of society when there are so many crazy criminals running loose in society. In fact, since we are so concerned about the rights of the criminals now days - allowing more and more to run free, this is the time that more innocent citizens should get guns. Women especially should have guns, with all of the rapists and perverts running loose. If I was an attractive woman I would be armed at all times, that's for sure.
As your next president I will work to defend the second amendment. If the Swiss can have all the guns that they do and have such little problem with armed criminal action, why can't we? The problem in America is not the guns, the problem in America is a society that is becoming increasingly lawless. The breakdown of the American family is at the root of the problem. If we can return the family unit to it's former glory in our country we won't need to take guns away from people. And that's what I fully intend to work on, as a president who is more concerned with America than I am with the rest of the world.
