Medicare
Medicare is the federal government social health care plan for people 65 years old and older. It began back in 1965, signed into law by President Johnson. Medicare is not Medicaid. They are different programs with different funding. (Medicaid is a social health care program designed to help the low income folk, the disabled, etc.) Medicare spends a lot of tax money. In fact, Medicare accounts for over 10% of the Federal budget - if you can imagine. Nevertheless, I have no problem with taking care of seniors who spent their lives working hard to give us so much.
The reason that I am addressing this issue is a little different than the others that I included in Index 2. I'm not addressing it because I have a big problem with the program, but because seniors need to be heard about their concerns of Medicare. Are the people designated to be helped by the system contented with it or do they want changes? The "Meet and Vote" program is tailor-made for this issue. It will give a voice to those who deserve it most - the elderly. I would like to know if the Medicare system is meeting the needs of the seniors.
There have been many changes in the system since it's inception including the very important addition of "Plan D" in 2006 (the prescription drugs plan). These days there is an ongoing feud in Congress about prescription drug coverage and pricing. Since lobbyists and big drug companies have been and are involved I do believe that there is a good chance that the elderly are going to get royally screwed over if the rest of us do not step in and keep an eye on the dealings between Congress and the lobbyists.
In the next few months we will see the Democrats and the Republicans arguing and bickering about this drug pricing. If I'm guessing right there is better than a 50/50 chance that when it's all over the retired elderly will not be happy with the service they receive from Medicare and the rest of the taxpayers will be disgruntled with a bunch of wasted tax money. As for the lobbyists and the big drug companies they represent, they'll be sitting pretty as usual. That's what I'm supposing will be the outcome.
I think that it would be a good idea for the taxpayers to get in on the decision making process concerning the various facets of this issue since most of them will depend on Medicare to one degree or another when they get older. This way we could negate the influence of the drug companies and their lobbyists. This would also be a good opportunity to show the elderly that we do appreciate what they have done for the country - and let them know that we want what's best for them. If the taxpayers are not allowed to get involved, the Washington tomfoolery will reign supreme in the decisions that need to be made.
I'm sure that the American Taxpayers would like to get involved. Therefore it is my opinion that this issue should be addressed using the "Meet and Vote" program. The "Meet and Vote" process will allow the taxpayers to bypass everything that could possibly hinder the will of the people, which is what it is designed to do. While we are at it we can address any complaints that those currently on Medicare have about the program.
