Social Security

The nationwide federal social welfare program known as the Social Security Act became a reality in 1935. According to a speech given in December of 1936 by Frank Bane, the executive director of the Social Security Board, the American people demanded the social security program due to insufficiencies in previous state and federal social welfare programs. I'm not sure if the people knew what they were getting themselves into.

As a small business owner 15% of my profits come right off of the top and go to the Social Security system. I've been doing that for over 20 years and I've never liked it. I'd rather keep that money and invest it myself. I'd rather be personally responsible for my health and my retirement. But that is not an option at this time. The debate over the problems inherent in the Social Security system is a perpetual one. There are good patriotic men and women on both sides of that fence. Some want the system overhauled. Some want no change. There are plenty of speculators in between those two extremes.

But what do the majority of the American Taxpayers want? Are the American Taxpayers happy with the Social Security system as it is? Do they want change? Do they want more of a say in what the government does with all of that money they collect from everyone's paycheck? Do they want the system to be discontinued? Since the people are the highest authority in the land, and since they are the ones who provide the money that keeps the Social Security system working, I think that they should decide what changes should be made to the system - if any.

Before any changes are made to the system it is of the utmost importance that the American Taxpayers get better informed on how the system works, it's advantages and it's disadvantages. Therefore when the time comes to address this issue (if the people want it addressed) we will address it using the "Meet and Vote" program. This way the people will get their way, bypassing all of the tomfoolery in Washington and the Congressional committees that take forever to conclude anything - and even longer to do anything about it.

This is how the "Meet and Vote" program works. The nation will "Meet" via national television to discuss this issue so that the people can get properly informed about it. Otherwise when it comes time to "Vote" on the issue the people will not be sure how to vote. Each issue that the American Taxpayers want addressed will be addressed in a location different from the previous one. For example, the meeting(s) for this issue might be held in Memphis while the meetings for the next issue may be held in Salt Lake City. The meetings will move around the country. They will never be held in Washington, D.C. (see Index 2 for over 50 issues, many of which the American Taxpayers may want addressed).

At these televised meetings will be various national leaders and some of your elected representatives - and the experts that they decide should educate the people on the topic at hand. Your vice president will also be there (sometimes) and other federal, state and local officials who have an interest in making sure that the American Taxpayers get properly informed will be at the meetings.

I, your president, will always be at the meetings since it will be my responsibility to make sure that all views are equally and fairly represented to the American Taxpayers. It will also be my responsibility to keep order in these meetings since some of them may tend to get a bit "lively". Also present at every meeting will be a live audience of American Taxpayers who will be given the opportunity to participate in the meetings with questions and statements. Taxpayers at home will also have the opportunity to ask questions of the featured speakers and/or their representatives via the telephone or the internet.

The sole purpose of the meeting(s) is to inform the American Taxpayers so that they can vote properly when that time comes. Therefore the meetings will be held in the evenings and rebroadcast through the night for all to see. After the American Taxpayers have been properly informed about the issue at hand they will be given options to vote on concerning the issue. The day after the options are given to the people they will go to the polls and vote their conscience.

When the votes have been tallied the taxpayers will be informed of the outcome of the vote, as will their leaders. The majority always rules. The nation's elected representatives will then immediately enact the will of the people into law. Thus, the will of the people will again be reestablished as preeminent in Washington. This is a very simple and fair process that the American Taxpayers will like. This is a quick and efficient way to settle issues that Congressional committees take forever to settle.

Using this process to decide issues will eliminate the bad influence of lobbyists, the corrupt judges who use their authority to attempt to legislate law, and the influence of the media including the talking heads on television and radio who desire to sway their audiences. It will also keep the president in check so that he doesn't run off in his own direction (that would be me). We've seen enough of that lately.

The plan at this time is to address one issue per month but that may be a bit ambitious - especially at first while the bugs are being worked out of the system and the people are growing used to it. I'm sure that a dry run will be in order so that the people can know what to expect. I am confident that after the first few issues are addressed in this manner the taxpayers will get used to it. They will also begin to regain confidence in their federal government as they see that their leaders are willing to do the will of the people in Washington.

As for the issue at hand, Social Security, this "Meet and Vote" procedure is the perfect venue for settling the debate. The American Taxpayers will get their way concerning this issue as they will in all of the others that are addressed using the "Meet and Vote" program. That's what the new American Taxpayer party movement is all about. Reestablishing the will of the people.
